I'm sliding all over the fretboard now...and the country thing I get...My peeps from Ft. Worth...Sly Stone had roots there too, I recall...we make music from the soul, after learning our instrument. And this takes my being away from this Corona back and forth...social distancing...we musicians know this from the first time we pick up any instrument and have as much fun expressing what's inside each of us....gosh, we got kids now, shredding from near birth and IDK now they get that feeling, other than being young enough, just like legendary blues men of the South...Jim Crow couldn't stop what we feel in our hearts....I think of all the riots lately and dig deep down and feel what I felt when Dr. King was murdered and nothing was done...so we kept it all inside us....now...with all of the stuff going on in the world...we're still here, learning something that could help free our inner soul, if we allowed it to "speak' whatever so Country and R& B and Blues, Church music wilh such deep emotion only politicians might not feel anything while listening to this awesome video preserving Cornell's lasting musical style for new players who will build uopn this foundational instructional...to find themselves...their voice...but the sliding notes gives me all sorts of ideas since I mainly play keyboards for a living-ish...things shut down...back to Woodshed and finding this vid...like hitting bitcoin jackpot or pure gold not for sale at any price. All you have to do is commit and put in the time. Another video, shortly before he left here for God's Band....he talks in more detail about his style and picks, especially and how he developed the agile fingers...we each have our strengths and areas we need to work harder on...but you can see what he put into his career as a Motown studio Icon...God Rest His Soul for asking him mother for something that, obviously she "knew" he wouldl go far with...Johnny Watson...wow..saw dude in LA, wife and me..Olympic Auditorium, one of his last touring concerts. "Ain't that a Real Mother for Ya' " rocked the place that night. Legends...to inspire..."Duck Soup" I have got to learn..no matter how long it takes....tearing it apart now...thank you Lord, for Cornell and his humility while living his dream musically...Stories...love them. The funk of Duck is in my spirit now...I feel the root....down South...though Cali...babies would dance to this...can't help feeling music until we get "stiff" in the box..until then...we love this.
Great sound. He’s played on over 2500 sessions and his album credits read like a who’s who of R&B. Also now that he mentions it, you can really hear the Texas swing influence-love musicians who take everything they hear and mix it up. Also the bends are amazing. Finally, the stretches in “honkey tonk.” I had a band leader who would make me play this for about ten minutes while he jammed to build up my hand strength-it hurt so bad I would sneakily tune the E string up to an F so I could rest. Lazy 16 Year old. Lol When I was 16 or so I discovered his track “Blue Nocturne” on an Atlantic Records blues sampler. Highly recommended deep cut. The lone drum and guitar intro is mesmerizing. Once the organ and bass hit it’s sublime.
Just looked this up on Spotify. Absolutely Beautiful. A shame it only has 70,000 views. If they played this on the radio the world would be a better place.
It's great hearing him grunt-hum along with his playing. I'm glad the mic picked that up and they didn't isolate the amp. This is my guitar bible now. This document is truly a national treasure.

Agreed. Even amongst people who “know their shit” haha. He is underrated. Period. Problem is many modern players or just younger generations in general don’t really have much knowledge on old school R&B musicians. Because nowadays computers make all the popular R&B. With notable exceptions obviously. Have to say though recently I’ve come across several RUclips channels of young people teaching modern R&B/pop/hip hop guitar parts. So maybe it’s coming back around.

The late great Jerry Wexler, producer of legendary soul, R&B, and rock acts over the decades, as well as Executive V.P. of Atlantic Records, once said that only two guitarists - just two - were able to play the demanding and deceptively difficult style combining rhythm and lead guitar: Steve Cropper, the session guitarist at Stax and for Booker T. and the M.G.s - and Cornell Dupree. Dupree - a native of Fort Worth, Texas, ended up performing on more than 2,500 sessions over his many decades in the music business, and backed performers as diverse as tenor sax great King Curtis, soul vocalist-pianist Aretha Franklin, and too many others to count. He also played funky licks for Stuff, the "house band" for 'Saturday Night Live," and played as a solo artist in his own right. @@TANTRUMGASM I too was into Rock and then metal. I love Eddieíiiií but I was a self taught Randy Disciple. I definitely did learn some (steal some) Eddie tapping and legato licks but I spent months trying to perfect the solos to Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley and Revelation Mother Earth. I was very young when I got a guitar player magazine and one of the guest lessons (back then they came on a floppy 45 record) by Al Di Meola and I was blown away. At a local Record and Tape Exchange store I picked up Elegant Gypsy and I was hooked for good. That led to my mind being more open to so much. My parents were children of the 50s so I loved early Rock and Motown but finding instructional material was nearly impossible. Anyway, finding Danny Gatton's Hot Licks was great because I had seen him live several times (I grew up in Maryland) but I didn't know they had so much more...

I discovered Cornell from Joe Cocker`s Stingray album. Joe was collaborating with a band called Stuff, that included Eric Gale , Richard Tee, Gordon Edwards ,Steve Gadd & Cornell. They were all great.

You almost certainly wouldn't or couldn't have known about him in 1966. He was in the King Curtis live band based in NYC then and in fact went back to Fort Worth from '66 to '68 and played there locally because his gigs had gotten slow in NY. He came back to NY and King Curtis in '68, but he got REALLY famous, at least in the business, c. early 1970 when that "Rainy Night In Georgia" record came out and he deservedly became a much in-demand studio player. But you could have picked up on the great Steve Cropper of the MGs in 1966.

But you had to wait for it to come in the mail, and then when you got it you had to practice in the living room because that’s where the VCR was.

SNL always had its own band, but they apparently were influenced by Stuff in the mid-70s when the latter were appearing several nights a week at Mikell's on Manhattan's Upper West Side before they recorded as a group. All the hip young local pro musicians hung there digging the sounds. Stuff drummer Chris Parker played in the SNL band for six years but that was later, beginning in 1986 according to his Wiki bio. Stuff itself broke up around 1981.

@@TANTRUMGASM I too was into Rock and then metal. I love Eddieíiiií but I was a self taught Randy Disciple. I definitely did learn some (steal some) Eddie tapping and legato licks but I spent months trying to perfect the solos to Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley and Revelation Mother Earth. I was very young when I got a guitar player magazine and one of the guest lessons (back then they came on a floppy 45 record) by Al Di Meola and I was blown away. At a local Record and Tape Exchange store I picked up Elegant Gypsy and I was hooked for good. That led to my mind being more open to so much. My parents were children of the 50s so I loved early Rock and Motown but finding instructional material was nearly impossible. Anyway, finding Danny Gatton's Hot Licks was great because I had seen him live several times (I grew up in Maryland) but I didn't know they had so much more...
@@seanfitzpatrick7878 ..oh yeah, Randy opened up my eyes/ears to a different sound,(revelation Mother earth solo.. is one beautiful , "violin solo". ..always reminded me of classical violin ,my favorite instrument ).. Uli Roth, di meola and Even SRV and Eric Johnson pulled me in......but guys Like Albert Lee, Steve Cropper, Niles Rogers, eddie Hazel, ...I never appreciated them until my mid 30's? ish ..i havent played in 2 years and dusted off my guit during corona, only learning new things i never learned..just "faked it"...like this dupree vid, and some holdsworth tricks..lol.......I will pick up something i never played before ! cheers!

I discovered Cornell from Joe Cocker`s Stingray album. Joe was collaborating with a band called Stuff, that included Eric Gale , Richard Tee, Gordon Edwards ,Steve Gadd & Cornell. They were all great.
I remember seeing "Stuff" perform on Saturday Night Live back in the early days, 1975 or 76'.
Stuff is awesome.. they have a few great albums on yt at mikells and lonestar cafe.

Cornell Dupree was one of the giants of Soul music guitar, along with Steve Cropper. There were other innovators too, like Reggie Young.

You almost certainly wouldn't or couldn't have known about him in 1966. He was in the King Curtis live band based in NYC then and in fact went back to Fort Worth from '66 to '68 and played there locally because his gigs had gotten slow in NY. He came back to NY and King Curtis in '68, but he got REALLY famous, at least in the business, c. early 1970 when that "Rainy Night In Georgia" record came out and he deservedly became a much in-demand studio player. But you could have picked up on the great Steve Cropper of the MGs in 1966.

@@Rubin5342 You're welcome! Brook Benton's "Rainy Night In Georgia" was the hit I was referring to that Cornell played on. I just checked out the BJ Thomas version on RUclips and there's no detectable lead guitar on it.
