It’s time for a FWD hot hatch showdown! Mat’s in the Hyundai i20N, and he’s lining up against the Ford Fiesta ST and VW Polo GTI!
So how do they compare on paper? Well first up we have the i20N, which is powered by a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine to provide 204hp & 275Nm of torque. It also weighs in at 1,190kg.
Alongside the Hyundai we have the Fiesta ST. Its smaller 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged engine puts down 200hp & 290Nm, and it’s a touch heavier than the i20N, with a weight of 1,255kg.
Then finally we have the VW Polo GTI. It’s hiding a larger 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine under the bonnet, with a power output of 200hp & 320Nm. It’s also a bit heavier than its competitors, topping the scales at 1,335kg.
So, which of these FWD hatchbacks will come out on top? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Hyundai has come a long way and they're on the right track with their N performance division.
And right then electric cars come :D
@@MotoMario1 What’s your point here? Be it electric, hybrid, petrol or a diesel.. knowledge of tuning the chassis and dynamics will help them irrespective of power unit.
@@TheWAP5 My point is emotions
Agreed
Hyundai is really good at making electric cars as well. It seems like Hyundai is still smiling.
To be fair enough, three cars should change lanes on each replay.
And/or drivers...
a change of drivers too. wanted to see matt in the gti
They should change lanes during the race.

Exactly! Tired of seeing super cars drag race.
I don't understand why he's not turning on the N mode which is like race/sport mode instead of doing it in normal mode for drag races but still a very decent performance despite of not using the N mode for races like these. Such a brilliant affordable car. Good job hyundai👍🏻
It's more responsive with higher boost, 18psi instead of 15psi in N mode. Mine is always in N mode.
How can anyone launch a car like that knowing the harm it's doing while axle tramping? It must lose traction too.
Because in N mode it would smoke the competition in every race which would be boring lol
@@keng4066Axle tramp isn’t damaging in itself. It’s just feels horrendous. But admittedly to get axle tramp levels you might be making the clutch cry.
@@rikkiseddo As a retired engineer I beg to differ. Axle tramp is not something the car is designed to do and when it happens it creates enormous stress on the tyres, the suspension components and the drivetrain. I would never do it to my car and the chance of something breaking is up there.
I know launch control is a common feature these days but it baffles me why manufacturers offer it in vehicles that they know will tramp like crazy but deny warranty for minor modifications.
For the record I have a couple of N cars now. A 2022 i20N and a 2024 i30N sedan auto, both in PB. Happy days!
@@keng4066 From my understanding, axle tramp isn't too terrible every time, as in it doesn't cause too much wear (compared to other wear caused by launching a car), but it has a constant risk to suddenly cause a few issues, namely (assuming FWD) breaking the engine mounts, and having the engine come free in the engine bay, but also increased differential wear, increased wear to CV joints, and a few others like suspension bushes will wear quicker, dampers trying to control the vibration style movement in the suspension will wear quicker.
I agree it's not great to do, but just choosing to not launch a car is only one solution, and that may work fine for you, but for others:
You could get stronger engine mounts (on FWD) to minimise this, I've even heard a stronger ARB will help, or, when it happens, give it more throttle, so the tyres stop hooking up, but you don't bog down like you would if you let off, then ease back off the throttle, to attempt to stop the wheelspin you've just created.
I personally agree with you that launch control is a bit stupid, it increases wear for only a marginally better launch.
If I'm trying to get away quick at the lights, I'd probably just pull away normally (slipping the clutch below 2k rpm), then once the car's moving, give it a proper bootfull.
If I'm showing off/doing it for fun, then I'd rather light up the front wheels, which would minimise wear (ask anyone who drag races, the worst thing that can happen is the tyres hooking up on a launch), and it'd be a spectacle for anyone watching, and assuming no one-tyre fire, the diff, gearbox, engine and suspension would receive less wear, with only the tyres getting more wear.
You've got to keep in mind, if you're getting a hot hatch, you're probably getting it to drive hard.
I’m a GTI owner, I have an advice for Carwow and anyone reading this comment, when you’re doing a pull from a dig with a FWD, do not use Launch Control, just floor it. The difference is huge. I managed 7.4s with Launch Control and 6.5s without launch control (Both on Sport mode) ELS diff.
If you launch from 3-3.5k rpm u get a clean launch in a civic si so maybe the same in the vw🤷🏾♂️
Same here. I’ve got the GTi+ with DSG. Tried launch control twice. All it did was sound awful! Just flooring in sport works far better and let the torque work. The other 2 are probably more fun at times but as a comfy all rounder which then decimates other traffic on a narrow B road overtake, you can’t beat the Polo GTi (and I’ve had M3 and 911!)
No offense here. I am also a former Polo GTI owner (had a 2020 Model fully loaded, but someone drove into it so I had to replace it.). The Polo GTI is super slow from 100-200Km/h it's terrible. The new FL version will get a 7 Speed DSG, which hopefully fix this a bit. I can't understand how these other cars in the test are almost doing even worse. Quality wise and from the maturity of the car, the Polo is WORLDS ahead of every competitor, that's for sure.
@@t3chn0m0 not when its racing a Toyota GR Yaris
@@t3chn0m0 For me it's on a UK B road (very narrow, bumpy, twisty) I use 90% of the time. Speed limit is 60mph (100Km/h) anyway so it's about going from 30-70MPH quickly to get past slow trucks in limited opportunities. I'm not going from 80-120MPH (140-200Km/H) = instant ban ! Many faster cars are just too wide to overtake.

I’ve had a Polo GTI Plus from new since 2019, and I still genuinely love it. Tbh I love it more now than ever. For me it’s the right balance of comfort and speed, and on the motorway I can easily average 55+mpg so it doesn’t rinse my wallet. As a daily driver I think it would be the best of the three, but tbh if I was doing a track day, I’d probably lean towards the Hyundai 👀
Had mine since new in 2019 too.
VW wanted to buy it back a month ago and offered me 18,000 which I thought was nuts.
I was expecting depreciation to have them offer me way less than that.
I kept it, because I like it lots.
Always been a golf fan all my life but i dislike the new chunky style so much that id rather have a polo if i had to choose

I love my Polo too
I’ve had my polo gti since 2019, and it’s an absolutely wonderful car.
It’s easy to guess which car will win, Mat always takes the fastest one, and starts on the left, so you can see him overtake both cars in the same shot.
But most episodes 992 Turbo S was in this channel it was on the right and without Matt driving it.
When grand tour raced polo and fiesta on a dry track the polo beat the fiesta. This race was just about who got the best traction off the line

The fact that the hyundai and the fiesta sound better than some cars which are much faster with a bigger engine and 4 or 5 times the cost which is just crazy.
You gotta remember that Hyundai's N line are effectively BMW M cars. Albert Biermann the former head of research for BMW's M division went over to Hyundai for a while, literally founded their N division and then after making a couple of Hyundai's cars sporty and fun retired as head of R&D and now continues as a consultant for Hyundai and their N line. These things are QUICK, they sound fantastic and they're just little tiny M cars.
They are fun to drive, but Hyundai Kia are having huge problems with engine failures in the US, and that doesn't inspire much confidence even in the Czech built N cars
@@msagoo29 lmao the N cars don't have any problems here in US, there were few cars but that's not every single car and you can get it easly replaced under warranty. Yall just mad your shitty slow ford st which is our American car and gti slower than i20n
The Polo GTI sounds better than that in sport mode Matt. Make sure the other guys are always in the sportiest settings for the sound check
Ekse im surprised why did this on a wet track... they must do it on a dry track..the vrrpaa would win😂😂

The i20N is so impressive, should be in the running for car of the year tbh. This test doesn't really matter, but still good to see it do so well. It comes on Pirellis as standard as well which are typically not great in the wet, whereas the Fiesta is already on Michelin PS4s. The brand snobs need to get with the times.

Yeah, looking at the I20N aswell, instead of the I30N, can`t really justify the 10k+ more for the I30N

@@swabilius yeah I’d be looking at a i30N that’s a few years old so around the same price of the i20N. I’d prefer the more space, the looks and sound, the adaptive suspension. But brand new it’s not really worth the extra money, especially not as they increased the price a fair bit for the facelift ones
I30Ns are amazing, depends if you care about passenger comfort. I still think a i30N is too small but I cram 4 passengers in there a lot. If you don’t have passengers often get the i20N.

the polo's dsg helps when it brakes, putting engine brake on. automatic gear boxes do that :D
Doesn't matter when you do a full emergency braking ... the brakes should be more than powerful enough to fully lock the wheels, more so on that wet surface. Probably the tires made a huge difference here.
The best brake is that when you don t lock weels. So engine brake takes away energy and abs is not used as hard. So that makes a shorter brake distance. Just try it and you will see, even in manual if you do it.
@@mgn1985 When you press hard the brake pedal as they do here, the ABS is the only thing that prevents the wheels from locking up. The combination of the tires + the ABS controller is the reason that Polo stoped so fast, this has nothing to do with the DSG or engine braking.
@@vladulescuadrian6080 you are right man, there is no Physics in braking, just abs.

I've never wanted to own a Hyundai so much 😭 Also I can agree that it's a wheelspin mess, but with a steady right foot that Polo is capable of sub 15 in wet conditions, & I'm sure it would beat the Fiesta in the dry. After driving my GTI+ for a year now, I can't wait to get rid of it. Constant issues with electronics, wheels & brakes has me thinking this will be my last VW.
Really nice one @carwow, and I don't know if that was on purpose but thanks to your dashboard gopro on the i20 N we can even notice that you didn't activate the "N mode" which is the racing mode of the i20 N. On "N mode" the Speedometer looks way different.
So basically you did all of the test on "normal mode" but still got those amazing results !
Such a beast !
Thanks
Finally doing more with the Hyundai N cars!
6:32 - it's easy to win if you jump the start
It seems so but maybe the i20 has a better grip. Even when Fiesta got the start, the i20 trashed it fast. 7:13
i20 N: the new kid
Polo GTI: i have a polo shirt
Fiesta ST: *IM IN A FIESTA*
Hey Matt... Change lanes for each drag so each driver can experience the same wet spots. #fairplay
That's what she said !
That Hyundai is amazing for the money!
8:47 doesnt even have Sport Mode on!?!!
I'm the person who actually asked for this race.... Thanks Matt
much more interesting than watching robotized supercars driving themselves to the finish line 👍👍
also, much more informative for 'real world' future buyers

The moment when u realize this small fast hatchbacks sound better than many supercars🤣💀🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
I was just watching a car wow video and then a car wow advert came up
Ooooo the drag race I was waiting for :D. Thank you Carwow 😃👍. Could you do a video on the updated fiesta? :)

Wow am so surprised that the polo even in automatic got beaten... thumbs up to hyundai.... funny one though, it was as though Matt wanted the hyundai to loose to the other cars but he also got shocked at the results 😄... well then for the best results do the race again on a very dry day Matt... 😄
I20-N is actually supposed to do with a Polo-R or a GR Yaris, but it's okay cause the I20-N is a budget hot hatch.
Having owned a Polo I can say the gearbox is awful. Slow and dim-witted, feels like an old one they had lying around rather than using the 7 speeds the Golfs get
@@johndavidson3424 i20N is ST and GTI terrain.
For R or RS terrain it would need at least 50hp more.
@@dom3827 That's what the i30n is for.
@@MeakerSE no, the i30N is no where near 350 HP RS car terrain.
The i 30n is the focus ST competitor. Hyundai has nothing in their program to compete vs RS or R models.
Every day I come on here to look at something totally different and end up getting sidetracked by CarWow drag races..
The guy who's driving a polo🤦♂️💔his reaction time is poor
Yes that's true, especially in drag race 1 and 3
Maybe it’s the DSG😂😂
When the Top Gear that was presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hamond and James May ended.. It was a very dull moment for us petrol heads😔... we were lost... then we found a home again at Carwow😏.. thanks for the great drag races and content
Hyundia absolutely killing it with the N cars 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Matt you naughty, naughty boy, you jump the third race quite noticeably 😆
A race between all of Hyundais N models would be a good watch! The i20N, i30n, i30n fastback and the Kona N! Please make it happen!
Hyuandai’s dash looks like a Lambo. Great for Hyundai. Sad for Lambo.
Im watching first time your channel.

God I can't wait to get my hands on i20n, the complete package for that price is incredible.
god doesn't exist
@@michaelanderson7715 where do you live?
@@Has7DCTNote; 'doesn't exist' refers to 'god', nothing else ! If you already interpreted it as that, then where I live is irrelevant.
@@michaelanderson7715 God doesn't exist. OK
The German laws are really nerfing stock rev contests for their cars😂
I don't understand the reasoning if I get a sports car im gonna wanna hear what it sounds like revving and to show off to my friends 😂😂😂
@@vanderz1012 yeah man it’s gotta be rowdy because that’s how we petrol heads like it😂😂
@@Uno-he9rm agreed
Is it me or the matrix took a big ass glitch with that golf at 5:18
I20 N is an amazing little car
Whoever was driving the ST sounds like they didn't put it into Sport or Track mode for the rev off? It opens a valve at the back and gives it some pops on the tune. :)
It did pop
@@vvvvel yea, but nothing like a stock fiesta with open valve. This in the video was strange. The real thing pops much louder and sounds overall beefier.
No idea what they did wrong in the test.
@@dom3827 It's the car, you can actually tune it down.
@@vvvvel i know, i own one since 2 years, lol.
But even with closed valve it was off.
@@dom3827 What it could be is a refreshed ECU from the factory.
Can’t wait for my i20N delivery! Glad I picked the winner!
me too! what colour did you go for?
@@ndhkroatien999 The performance blue, you? No black roof though, delivery time was too long for that :(
That was so interesting! I own Skoda Octavia VRS(2011) 200hp, i would love to join that race with it! 😀 So much fun!!!
Yesss and throw in a Renault Clio RS
@@kumquatflavouredkoalas1618 another great hot hatch ❤️
Good race, those i20n looks like good fun!
Mat I test drive the i20N today at hyundai dealership but the car never had blind spot in the mirrors and I was told it doesn't come with it🤬 or the adjustable boot floor shelf to lower/move it up or down storage
Finally a drag race with the i20N.
Polo is getting a face-lift and 8KW more power.....but still no LSD 😔, just an XDS for cornering which actually works. Guess VW executives don't see this as a race car 🏎
The twin charger was faster than the current offering 😖
@@bigwheelercenisfeeler8880 it wasn’t! But it was more exciting for sure!
5:17 whats up with the vw ?
